So the starting odometer on the last day was 9645 and we added 296.9 arriving at the Dog house with a total of 8789 miles driven for the trip.  Of course there were a few more miles driving around towns looking for gas and diner.  The final day was driven on US 15-86-390-90 and local streets back. 15 is becoming 99 and the pieces in northern PA and southern NY are finally connected.  I guess the bridges finally got finished.
There is more color around here than other places we traveled. The paper recommends the Blue Ridge Parkway for color watching, but it has to be a few weeks from now.
It's a lot of driving in 25 days.  It was a good trip.
Other observations
More than four cars would be very difficult.
Try to stay away from rush hour in the bigger cities.
Keep a sense of humor.
Enjoy the process.
Enjoy the driving.

So Bob left us and returned to Baltimore on Friday and the rest of us made it home early Saturday afternoon. It's good to be home. Some random thoughts and observations about the trip:
It's a big country especially if you take secondary roads.
None of us would have dared to do this kind of trip alone.
The early settlers were very brave and resourceful.
The west coast is extraordinary as are our national parks
The Olympic Peninsula is a very special place.
The mouth of the Columbia river is very wide.
There is very little 93 octane gas west of the Mississippi.
Western North Dakota is a mess due to the oil drilling.
Who would have predicted that we would have beautiful weather everyday?
The Tail of the Dragon and Blue Ridge Parkway are great drives when there is little traffic.
There are lots of bicyclists touring our country.  Some are in groups but many are solo.
People all over the country like older 911s.
There are lonelier roads than the "lonliest road in America".
At the bonneville salt flats you can see the curvature of the earth.
Small independent restaurants and motels are always worth finding.
There are lots and lots of trucks on the road.

Another Day on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Starting odometer reading was 9287. We added 358.1 miles today. Bob left us at 237.6 to head to Baltimore,MD and empty out his car and begin the cleaning before bringing it back to the DogHouse.
We used local roads to get back to the Blue Ridge Parkway and that became the Skyline Drive. The low speed and traffic prompted us to leave it for US 33-340-15 into Mechanicsburg.
There wasn't much color in the trees as we drove along. A little bit in the higher elevations the further north we went. Some very dense fog early at the ridge line top. At a few points you realize that you are at the very top as there are valleys on both sides of you. Some spectacular views in spots. It is a beautiful drive. A few more !miles to home tomorrow.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Starting odometer reading was 8996 and we added 290.7 miles today. We started on US 40 and moved onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. Into Roanoke, VA tonight via US 221.
A little rain and some fog as we started out. The day cleared as we moved down the parkway reveling some great views of the valleys below.
No traffic in front of us for the most part and that allowed some nice twisties driving. The rest of the a parkway tomorrow, onto  the Skyline Parkway as we say goodbye to Bob and head for home Saturday night.

We are now in Roanoke, Va., about two thirds of the way up the Blue Ridge Parkway. After the parkway we will do the Skyline Drive up to Route 66 at Front Royal.  That will be about 220 miles and will set us up to return home on Saturday. Bob will go to Baltimore tomorrow. Today started with rain and a low ceiling. We were in the clouds some of the time.  The weather cleared and we had some great views in the afternoon.  We were lucky in that there was little traffic so we could do some spirited driving on the parkway.
